Pichora or Pichhaura is a traditional Kumaoni dupatta worn by Brides or Married women in Uttarakhand. Especially in Kumaon, women carry this beautiful piece of cloth at weddings, festivals, family functions, ceremonies, etc.
In today’s world of social media and fashion, it’s common for people from different cultures or regions to adopt trends and styles they like from others. Pichora is one of the most famous attires in Uttarakhand and is donned mostly by Kumaoni Brides. Nowadays, people find various designs and handwork on it, and they carry it with style and ease.
Recently, cricket legend M.S. Dhoni’s wife, Sakshi, gracefully carried a Pichora during Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding day. Not only Pichora, Sakshi also wore a Galobandh, a very famous piece of jewelry from Uttarakhand. Fans from Uttarakhand praise her for proudly showcasing the traditional look of their roots.
Common Way of Carrying Pichora
The word Pichora comes from the typical Kumaoni language, which is made of two different words Pichh and Orhna, Picch means back and orhna means cover so basically Pichhaura is a cloth or scarf that is used to cover the back and head by married women in Kumaon region.
Now, the Kumaoni Pichora, or Pichhaura, is a designer piece of cloth that is accepted by many in India and overseas. A red or maroon-colored cloth with a yellow or orange circle looks elegant on brides and married women.
Pichora Style with Outfit
Everyone is a fashionista today, so you can’t carry such grace by adding things in the same way. Now brides are carrying this over lehenga too, though traditionally it has only been worn with sarees. You have to decide how to put Pichora as per your overall outfit whether it’s a saree, gown, ethnic suit, or lehenga.
Pichora Style like Dupatta
The dupatta is commonly worn with suits (Kurti-Pajama). Now, the Pichora serves as a dupatta for married women, as they can drape it over their shoulders and pin it across their waist. There are different ways to put it over the shoulder, this looks amazing because of its unique design.
